OverviewUnder the editorship of Dr Jack Lesher, four authors cover the microbiology of the skin in this atlas textbook featuring a series of photographs, mostly in colour, printed opposite pages of instructive captions and clinical insights. Dr Raza Aly is the author of seven chapters on bacteria, covering the gamut of clinical stains used to identify these organisms, cultures, special tests, and summary tables. Dr Dirk Elston provides five chapters on ectoparasites, arthropods and pinworms, while Dr Dennis Babel is the author of five chapters on mycology diagnostics covering laboratory methods, dermatophytes, nondermatophytic hyaline and dermataceous moulds, yeasts and dimorphic fungal pathogens. Dr Philip Cohen supplies an introduction, plus two chapters on herpes simplex virus, varicella-zoster virus, and cytomegalovirus, plus culture preparations and immunofluorescent tests. This work should be useful as a diagnostic and how-to manual for dermatologists, residents, and general practice and primary-care physicians. Full Product DetailsAuthor: J.L. Dermatology residents will find this book useful in studying for the microbiology and insect identification section of the dermatology board-certifying exam. I have read many texts on this subject which tend to be rather boring, especially if one is not a microbiologist or entomologist. I actually found myself enjoying the clinical photographs of the various infections, bugs, and fungal cultures for a change. The clinical pictures for the most part are superb. There are very clear instructions on how to perform gram stains, Tzanck smears, and various cultures. Readers can use this book to make fungal identification if they choose. There are tips on which skin lesions are best from which to obtain cultures for a particular condition. There is no obtuse pedagogy included in this book, only practical information. I highly recommend this book for anyone who will be dealing with infectious diseases of the skin. This book is worth owning just for the pictures; it is a bonus that the text is equal in quality to the photographs.
