OverviewExcerpt from An Account of the Reasoning Process This act, properly called the Reasoning Process, is a function of the mind, as the circulation of the blood, digestion, &c., are functions of the body, and is the characteristic that distinguishes the human mind from that of brutes.* It is the means bestowed by the Author of nature on man, by which he is enabled to acquire the knowledge that may be useful to him for the various purposes of life. Science, properly so called, is conversant only about rules or laws and may be separated into two grand divisions. -the one including the Physical or Natural Sciences, which relate to the laws of nature, or the laws which, in all the changes constantly taking place in the world around us, are invariably observed. The other division, comprehending all other sciences. In the former division, the rules or laws are fixed and established by the Creator. To these there are no exceptions. A single clear and unequivocal exception to any proposition assumed to be a law of nature, is a complete refutation of such proposition. In the latter division of the sciences, rules or laws may be laid down as the result of generalization, to which many exceptions may be found, with outat all invalidating these rules.
