OverviewAlzheimer's disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills, and eventually the ability to carry out the simplest tasks. In most people with Alzheimer's, symptoms first appear in their mid-60s. Estimates vary, but experts suggest that more than 5.5 million Americans may have Alzheimer's.According to the Alzheimer's Association, Alzheimer's disease accounts for 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases. Most people with the disease are diagnosed after age 65. If it's diagnosed before then, it's generally referred to as early onset Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's is the most common cause of dementia among older adults. Dementia is the loss of cognitive functioning-thinking, remembering, and reasoning and behavioral abilities to such an extent that it interferes with a person's daily life and activities. Dementia ranges in severity from the mildest stage, when it is just beginning to affect a person's functioning, to the most severe stage, when the person must depend completely on others for basic activities of daily living.Daily fish oil supplementation has long been researched for its positive effects on cognitive health. The key compounds within fish oil are essential fatty acids, like omega-3. These fatty acids may be able to prevent the degeneration of the brain tissue seen in Alzheimer's disease. This latest study, conducted during an eight-year period and published in January in the medical journal Neurology, suggests those who consume omega-3s like docosahaexonic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in larger amounts have larger brain volume in old age, especially in the hippocampus. Shrinkage of the brain matter is normal as we age, but is also a sign of Alzheimer's disease, which progresses much more rapidly.Again, there is no known cure for Alzheimer's at this time, but this latest research is promising and makes taking a daily fish oil supplement worth considering. Talk with your doctor about adding a fish oil supplement to your routine, as you should with any new supplement.Get a copy Now to know more!
