Overview

Amoxicillin is used to treat a huge array of bacterial ailments. It is used in the treatment of infections caused by certain types of bacteria. Amoxicillin oral pill comes as immediate-release (IR), extended-release (ER), or contraceptive pills. The ER tablet is only available since the brand-name medication Moxatag. The chewable tablet and IR tablet are just available as generic medications. Amoxicillin also comes as a capsule and a suspension. All forms are accepted orally. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic which kills bacteria by inhibiting the synthesis of cell wall mucopeptides (crystal lattice-like structures comprising amino acids). This weakens and destroys the bacterial cell wall. Amoxicillin has a similar activity to ampicillin. Amoxicillin belongs to the group of medications called penicillins.
