Table of ContentsReviewsWith a healthy dose of humor and imagination, Ambush at Shiprock engages readers, while educating them in an exciting, entertaining way. Kudos to author Bruce Crossfield for his creativity and vision to eradicate modern-day slavery by using a charming gecko narrator to gently inform his audience of the reality and dangers of domestic human trafficking. Stephanie Borges, Program Director, Serving USA What a creative and age-appropriate effort to introduce children to the harsh reality of trafficking! Intermingling facts with action through the narration of Spoon, a gecko, Bruce Crossfield masterfully frames information by the use of story. Martin W. Zuidervaart, Retired School Counselor Bruce Crossfield has wonderfully put together a book targeted for young teenagers entering a part of life where critical thinking is needed. He has created an adventure for the mind. He allows the reader to gain an understanding of Native American life and culture through the main character Aiyana who is half Navajo and half Nez Perce Indian. The setting is on the Navajo Reservation at Shiprock, NM. He has focused the natural environment and the native wildlife that exists there as a part of the story line. It is integrated into the human drama and allows the reader to think about the Native American respect for all living things by bringing the high desert flora and fauna to life. As a Nez Perce Indian growing up on my reservation in Idaho, I certainly would have enjoyed more books about Native people and Tribes to further help me grow and develop as a young man going though adolescence. I very much enjoyed reading the book and would encourage native youth to read it for your imagination and creative ideas, but also for the critical thinking of protecting yourself in a day and age where native women and children are being abducted at an alarming rate and astronomical percentage.
