A WISHING SHELF BOOK REVIEW 30th July 2020 TITLE: Amazing Hands AUTHOR: Melissa Salvarani, Elizabeth Cummings Star Rating: 4 CATCHY QUOTE 'Wash your hands! Within this cleverly constructed picture book, a child will learn why it's so important and how best to do it.' The Wishing Shelf REVIEW 'Wash your hands!' This is the simple message presented in this cleverly written and superbly illustrated picture book. And, to be honest, in a world overwhelmed with the Coronavirus, what better message is there! It's always so simple to tell a child to 'Wash your hands!' But how many parents get a chance to tell them why. This book attempts to do that. In most accessible language, the author looks at the many things kids do with hands, the germs that are always present on them, the best time to wash them and, possibly most important of all, the best way to do it. I loved a lot of things about this book. I loved how cleverly it was presented and how sensibly it has been put together. I loved how the fun illustrations work so well with the text to put across the message in a fun, interesting way. And I loved that the author wanted children to understand germs, the good germs and the bad. So, who is this book for? Well, it's for infant/primary school kids, basically 3 - 7year-olds. I suspect most schools would love to have this book in the library/classroom or, indeed, as part of a 'washing hands' lesson. Parents too would find it invaluable, particularly in the present Coronavirus world we live in. I always like to end with the bit I liked best. Well, this was it: (discussing fingers) Sometimes they end up in our mouths or even our noses. Sometimes they are a little bit rude. This element of humour (along with the pics) is what helps this book put across a not-so-exciting subject in an interesting way. Enjoy! A 'Wishing Shelf' Book Review www.thewsa.co.uk
