OverviewThis book examines the ways in which aluminium and its alloys satisfy the requirements of civil engineering structures and the applications in which they compete with steel. The first chapter presents aluminium alloys from the metallurgical and technological points of niew, which will help the engineer to understand the different designations and fabrication processes of alloys. In the second chapter aluminium alloys are presented as structural materials, their main differences from steel being emphasized from both the mechanical and cross-sectional points of view. The third chapter is devoted to specification aspects and provides the general lines of defferent international codes on safety, load and design criteria. Chapters 4 and 5 provide methods of analysis of welded connections and bolted connections, respectively, together with the presentation of different types joint. Strength of members is examined in Chapter 6. The first edition of Aluminium Alloy Structures was the most authoritative and complete treatment of the subject in a single volume and has come to be regarded as the standard reference text. In this second edition, completey new chapters on fatigue design and fire resistance are included. In addition, the chapter on stability has been divided into two to take account of the new coverage of cylindrical shells. Other new material covers Eurocodes, composite aluminium - concrete sections, and the results of recent research into a range of other topics. Over 200 new diagrams, photographs and tables have been added to the book, with detailed references provided at the end of each chapter. Since the book is addressed mainly to structural engineers, who are more familiar with steel structures, constant reference to steel is made throughout the text.
