Overview

This book examines many of the best DNS servers available. The book covers each server's benefits and disadvantages, as well as how to configure and deploy it, and integrate it into your network infrastructure. It describes scenarios where each server is particularly useful, so you can choose the most suitable server for your site. The book also explains how DNS data can be stored in LDAP directories and SQL databases. This lets you build robust DNS systems that can be automated, and can be managed by multiple, distributed, system managers. There is an extensive tutorial on using LDAP with DNS. Other important topics covered include: performance, security issues, integration with DHCP, DNSSEC, internalisation, and specialised DNS servers designed for some unusual purposes.

Finally--a clear, in-depth, and accessible guide to using BIND-DLZ! A must read for anyone considering alternate DNS servers. --Rob Butler, BIND-DLZ project creator and developer

Alternative DNS Servers taught me a few things about my nameserver I didn't know about! - Bert Hubert, principal author of PowerDNS The first book to describe NSD and Unbound in excellent detail -- NLnet Labs Finally -- a clear, in-depth and accessible guide to using BIND-DLZ! A must read for anyone considering alternate DNS servers. -- Rob Butler - BIND-DLZ project creator & author ... a valuable source of information for every PowerDNS administrator! -- Norbert Sendetzky (linuxnetworks.de) The chapter on dnsmasq is comprehensive and clear; it assumes nothing and takes the reader through the process of configuring the program from basics to advanced topics. It is certainly a great improvement on the sparse documentation supplied with dnsmasq. -- Simon Kelley As the author of MaraDNS, I am very impressed with Jan-Piet Mens' research. The quality of the MaraDNS chapter shows that Jan-Piet has done his homework, and that this is an informative accurate guide for anyone interested in learning more about DNS. -- Sam Trenholme (MaraDNS)
