OverviewThe world today lacks social connections, leading us into a multi-year-long loneliness epidemic. As societal behaviors and values change and polarization spreads, it's becoming harder for people to find community and purpose. The value of connections among individuals and groups (social capital) and the strength of these bonds and trust within a society (social cohesion) are drivers of well- being for both individuals and communities as a whole. Opportunities to decrease loneliness through building social connections and cohesion within our communities require an understanding of what is driving this epidemic. These driving factors encompass individual characteristics, social structure, neighborhoods, and the built environment. Although a variety of influences on social connections and loneliness exist, this creative project's specific focus on the built environment (more specifically, parking infrastructure) stems from a lack of research on the rise of this land-use problem. 20th-century urban planning began focusing on the automobile, planning cities for vehicles rather than people. It resulted in vast landscapes of parking and asphalt, ensuring our communities were scaled to the car, not the person. Now individuals travel independently, disconnected from the ongoings of each other's lives. Car-centric urban planning often limits public spaces where people can gather and interact, creating rather empty lots devoid of meaning or value.
