OverviewIn love and in war, is everything really allowed? No-not everything. Limits are what keep us human. What is International Humanitarian Law, really? Is it merely a system of abstract rules, or does it respond to a profound human need: to establish moral boundaries even in the chaos of war? This book offers an interdisciplinary analysis of armed conflict, bringing together international law, history, and psychology. Rather than simply describing legal norms, it examines their psychological and emotional foundations, their function, their resilience, and the forces that lead to their violation. The reader is guided through six core areas: - the historical evolution of the law of war - the most relevant provisions of International Humanitarian Law - the psychological origins of the rules governing armed conflict - the inner factors that foster compliance - the opposing forces that lead to violations - a comparative appendix on the dynamics of compliance and transgression International Humanitarian Law must not be confused with Human Rights law, which primarily applies in peacetime. IHL operates at the very heart of war-and for this reason, it can serve as a safeguard of humanity and a seed of peace.
