He spent his childhood in the theatre and went on to become an acclaimed screenwriter, novelist and historian. His Ming Dynasty 1566 series was adapted for TV and first broadcast in 2007. He was also screenwrote All Quiet in Peking, which accumulated 400 million online views in two months, and was picked up by Netflix.
