OverviewCoffee originates from Abyssinia (modern Ethiopia), from where it spread to Arabia and the rest of the Middle East. It came to Europe in the 16th century by Venetian merchants. The Dutch introduced it to the colonies of South America, Guyana, Colombia, and the West Indies. Later it arrived in the Caribbean and Brazil.Coffee was discovered as a consumer product a long time ago. We have testimonies of its consumption since the 8th century that it was used as food, then as a fermented drink, then as a medicine and finally as an infusion.Within the Arab tradition there are different versions of the discovery of coffee and its stimulating effects. One of the legends tells that a desert shepherd who was looking for pastures for his goats, one day ate wild black beans and the shepherd's surprise was to see how the animals jumped and were excited. This shepherd was perhaps the first man to discover the stimulating powers of coffee.
