Overview

Here is a thrilling, uplifting story of true-life heroism unequaled since the publication of Anne Frank's diary--a story that the young must hear and their elders must remember. Take Alicia's hand--and follow. Her name is Alicia. She was thirteen when she began saving the lives of people she did not know--while fleeing the Nazis through war-ravaged Poland. Her family cruelly wrenched from her, Alicia rescued other Jews from the Gestapo, led them to safe hideouts, and lent them her courage and hope. Even the sight of her mother's brutal murder could not quash this remarkable child's faith in human goodness--or her determination to prevail against overwhelming odds. After the war, Alicia continued to risk her life, leading Polish Jews on an underground route to freedom in Palestine. She swore on her brother's grave that if she survived, she would speak for her silenced family. This book is the eloquent fulfillment of that oath.

"A compelling voice, lucid prose...a luminous testimony to the heroism and humanity of one remarkable person. -- ""San Francisco Chronicle"" A powerful, intimate, searingly impressive memoir by a uniquely courageous and unusually intuitive young girl of the Holocaust nightmare and the years following. -- ""Chaim Potok, New York Times bestselling author"" As exciting as it is inspirational. In fact, a good bit of Alicia: My Story reads as if it were written by one of our better writers of fiction. -- ""Pittsburgh Press"" Profoundly observed...remarkably lived...ferocious bravery. -- ""New York Times"" Straightforward...energizing and inspirational. -- ""Newsday"" This memoir is heartbreaking. Author Information

"Alicia Appleman-Jurman (1930-2017) was a writer and lecturer. She was born in Rosulna, Poland (present-day Rosilna, Ukraine) and has written and spoken about her experiences of the Holocaust. Gabrielle de Cuir, award-winning narrator, has narrated over three hundred titles and specializes in fantasy, humor, and titles requiring extensive foreign language and accent skills. She was a cowinner of the Audie Award for best narration in 2011 and a three-time finalist for the Audie and has garnered six AudioFile Earphones Awards. Her ""velvet touch"" as an actor's director has earned her a special place in the audiobook world as the foremost producer for bestselling authors and celebrities. Stefan Rudnicki is an award winning audiobook narrator, director and producer. He was born in Poland and now resides in Studio City, California. He has narrated more than three hundred audiobooks and has participated in over a thousand as a writer, producer, or director. He is a recipient of multiple Audie Awards and AudioFile Earphones Awards as well as a Grammy Award, a Bram Stoker Award, and a Ray Bradbury Award. He received AudioFile's award for 2008 Best Voice in Science Fiction and Fantasy. Along with a cast of other narrators, Rudnicki has read a number of Orson Scott Card's best-selling science fiction novels. He worked extensively with many other science fiction authors, including David Weber and Ben Bova. In reviewing the twentieth anniversary edition audiobook of Card's Ender's Game, Publishers Weekly stated, Rudnicki, with his lulling, sonorous voice, does a fine job articulating Ender's inner struggle between the kind, peaceful boy he wants to be and the savage, violent actions he is frequently forced to take. Rudnicki is also a stage actor and director."
