Overview

"Alessandro Stradella was one of the most important composers of 17th-century Italy, contributing significant works to almost every contemporary genre. However, his precise position within the Italian musical baroque has never been properly evaluated, while his biography has long been enshrouded in myth and legend, following his murder in Genoa in 1682. This book is a life and works study of this important composer. The biographical section is the result of extensive documentary research over many years, and presents a clear account of Stradella's career and colourful personal life in all the cities where he lived - Rome, Venice, Turin and Genoa - as well as information on his patrons and the poets whose words he set. The musical discussion offers an exposition of Stradella's 308 extant compositions, illustrated with nearly 50 music examples. Stradella's distinct output offers an overview of all baroque genres (operas, oratorios, cantatas, concerti grossi, madrigals, motets, sonatas, and so forth). Many of his works also occupy crucial positions in the history of the period - for example, he is the composer of the earliest datable work for concerto grosso. This study of the life and works of Alessandro Stradella should contribute essentially to the knowledge of Italian baroque music. Carolyn Gianturco is the co-author (with Eleanor McCrickard) of ""Alessandro Stradella (1639-1682): A Thematic Catalogue of His Compositions""."
