OverviewThis in-depth study of a juvenile institution in Alaska explores the issues of power, resistance, treatment, and culture. Based on original research it seeks to establish the mediated place of culture, in this case of Alaska Native cultures, within the examination and assessment of the workings of the institution. Based on original research, this study seeks to establish the mediated place of culture, in this case of Alaska Native cultures, within the examination and assessment of the workings of the institution. It interrogates the notion of resistance in a juvenile facility by attempting to delineate its forms and strategies, how it functions within the institution, and how it operates with power relations. This work also unpacks the notion of 'treatment' and illustrates how in this institution, treatment has become ritualized and language of treatment reified. In doing so, it argues that cultural specificity, as an alternative discourse of treatment, has been marginalized and sidelined in the interests of satisfying needs of the institution rather than the needs of the individual resident.
