Overview

Alan Glass has dedicated his entire career to building objects. He has no equal in the history of art, with the exception of Joseph Cornell. Characters such as Queen Elizabeth I and King Ludwig II of Bavaria, ice castles, the sea (navigation), the sky (astrology) and the universe appear in his object boxes. Equally important are his two-dimensional works, in which, with his exquisitely versatile drawing, he has made his fantastic visions come true. This book is the result of a study carried out over two years by the prominent curator and lecturer Masayo Nonaka, a specialist in the subject of Mexican surrealism. He received a scholarship from the French government in 1952 and lived in Paris while travelling through Central Europe and the Middle East. During this time he exhibited at the Galerie Le Terrain Vague, where he met André Breton. From 1968 to 1969 he travelled through India and Nepal, particularly in the state of Sikkim. In 1962 he travelled to Mexico for the first time. In the 1970s, he began living between Mexico and Quebec. Alan Glass died in Mexico City on January 16, 2023, at the age of 90.
