OverviewThe Akbash dog, with its Turkish origins, is a large breed of livestock guardian dog (LGD). The breed was created to combat the threat of predators like wolves and bears to domesticated animals. The flock is well protected by Akbash dogs because of their loyalty, intelligence, and independence. Large in stature and weight, an average Akbash dog will be between 90 and 140 pounds and 28 and 34 inches tall at the shoulder. They are protected by the elements in part due to their thick, white coat. Although some dogs may have perked ears, floppy ears are more common. Akbash dogs are slender and muscular, with a broad chest and powerful limbs. The placid, self-reliant nature of the Akbash dog is one of its most defining characteristics. They tend to be shy and reserved around strangers, making them less sociable than more extroverted species. However, they are fiercely loyal to their loved ones and will risk all to defend them. Because of their intellect and ability to solve problems, Akbash dogs are also highly effective as livestock guardians. Although Akbash dogs were first intended to serve as livestock guardians, they also make wonderful companion animals for people's homes. They are patient and kind with kids and easy to train to be gentle. However, they may not always be compliant, therefore they will require tough but reasonable discipline. The Akbash dog is a rare and interesting breed that has served for centuries to guard cattle.
