Overview

This volume is dedicated to the monuments and buildings of Ahmadabad, the premier city of Gujarat. With its many mosques and tombs dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, Ahmadabad preserves some of the finest Indian Islamic buildings, though these are still little known outside the region. The step-well, unique to Gujarat, is another feature of Ahmadabad's architecture. Hindu and Jain temples throughout the city are built in a wide range of styles. Wooden houses with intricately carved wood-work testify to a vital vernacular expression. These diverse architectural traditions form the subject of separate chapters, each illustrated with photographs, plans and sections.

Author Information

George Michell trained as an architect in Melbourne, and then obtained a PhD in Indian Archaeology at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, with a dissertation on Early Chalukya temples. Since then he has undertaken numerous documentation and research projects, most recently with John M. Fritz at Hampi. Surendra Kumar studied information technology in Bengaluru, and now works part-time as a photographer, specializing in panoramic topographic views. His work has been spectacularly showcased in Discovering the Deccan (Pictor, Mumbai)
