Reviews

Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, 28-JAN-07 -- This hard-covered reference textbook of 355 pages is timely with the many treatment options currently in practice, and under investigation for age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). With the plethora of recent developments in ARMD the aim of a comprehensive review by international experts is a potentially difficult task. The book covers its aims, with a clear and concise style being used throughout. There is useful information on treatment and technique and in-depth information on basic science and possible future developments in clinical practice. The book is well organized and handsomely illustrated, particularly the imaging section. Overall, I found the book enjoyable to read and informative. The references were thorough and supported by an excellent index. This book is a good reference text for medical retinal specialists and generalists wanting to bring themselves up to date with recent advances in diagnosis and management of ARMD. I think this is an excellent reference text and one I would encourage our library to purchase. New England Journal of Medicine, Volume 14, Issue 355 -- D. Virgil Alfaro III and his colleagues have drawn together an international group of collaborators to take on the daunting task of compiling the collective knowledge of a field that is rapidly evolving and constantly incorporating new breakthroughs. For the most part, the editors achieve their intended goal. The final two sections, the real substance and strength of the book, are up-to-date and complete reviews of two key areas of age-related macular degeneration---treatment and future directions. With great depth and clarity, the book reviews the latest established and emerging therapies. There is a wonderful summary of photodynamic therapy with verteporfin, which can prevent progressive visual loss in age-related macular degeneration. Excellent review chapters cover the gamut of treatments, and for good measure there is a succinct chapter outlining the potential role of intravitreal triamcinolone in the treatment of choroidal neovascularization in age-related macular degeneration. In summary, this is an important reference and a comprehensive update on the subject. Much of the material covering the recent evidence in support of new therapies is timely. The book is a substantial achievement that will serve ophthalmologists and vitreoretinal specialists well.
