Das StÃ1/4ck schildert die Heimkehr des Agamemnon, des Königs von Mykene, aus dem Trojanischen Krieg und seinen Mord durch seine Frau Klytaimnestra und ihren Liebhaber Aigisthos. Klytaimnestra ist voller Hass auf Agamemnon, da er vor dem Krieg ihre Tochter Iphigenie den Göttern opferte, um gÃ1/4nstige Winde fÃ1/4r die griechische Flotte zu beschwören. Aigisthos sinnt auf Rache, weil Agamemnons Vater seinen Vater umbrachte und ihn als Kind verbannte. Agamemnon kehrt mit Kassandra, der Tochter des trojanischen Königs Priamos, als Kriegsbeute nach Hause zurÃ1/4ck. Klytaimnestra lockt Agamemnon in das Haus und ermordet ihn zusammen mit Kassandra. Die Tragödie untersucht Themen wie Rache, Gerechtigkeit, Schicksal und die zerstörerische Kraft des Hasses.
