Overview

Against All Odds is the true story of Alan Nebauer's remarkable experiences in the 1994-95 BOC Around the World Race for single-handed sailors. Sailing as a Class II competitor aboard the 50-foot (15.2 m) Newcastle Australia, Alan Nebauer had to endure incredible difficulties in a race that lasted almost eight months and covered 27,000 nautical miles. This book recounts the author's rescue of a fellow English competitor, his experiences of being dismasted and rounding Cape Horn with a jury rig, and the loss of his rudder north of the Falkland Islands, sailing with a steering oar to Uruguay. Beyond this, it is a testament to Alan's extraordinary courage and determination in the face of overwhelming odds, and to his outstanding seamanship for which he deservedly won two awards. Australian sailors, including Don McIntyre, David Adams, and others, have stamped an incredible imprint on the rich legacy of the classic BOC Challenge single-handed yacht race around the world. None, however, have faced the daunting obstacles Alan Nebauer confronted and overcame in his remarkable Newcastle Australia campaign. His first-hand account of his star-crossed voyage is a lesson in perseverance and, ultimately, a tale of triumph. Author Information

In spite of growing up in a small Australian town more than two hours away from the coast, Alan Nebauer harboured a deep passion for sailing since around the age of eight. Inspired by accounts written by the likes of Knox-Johnston, Robin Lee Graham and French single-handed sailor Moitessier, among others, he determined that he would one day sail single-handed around the world. He is always thankful for the wonderful opportunities that have allowed a boyhood passion to develop into a livelihood. He first realised his dream to sail around the world, racing in the single-handed BOC Challenge in 1994-95 (telling the story of that voyage in his first book, Against All Odds, published in 1996). With a lifetime on the water, he has built boats and works as a project manager and consultant in the marine industry. Alan has been married to Cindy since 1987 and they have two adult children who are always ready for adventure. Alan and Cindy are based in Jervis Bay, Australia, where they founded and operate a sailing charter business. Alan enjoys sharing his passion for long-distance sailing, and encouraging other sailors to embark on their own sailing adventures with confidence and safety.
