Overview"""Anything can happen in the dark..."" After Midnight is a collection of gothic short stories based on the folk legends and cautionary tales of the unknown that were collected in Britain by missing author Sidney Wainwright. All the tales are born from that inane human fascination with mystery and the macabre. From sinister unsolved murders or the exploits of slavers to the realms of the supernatural, and the mysteries of the human mind, these tales heighten the senses and take you back to those childhood fears that we are all drawn to once again when the lights go out. The tales are presented from a rediscovered manuscript by Sidney Wainwright's friend Archibald Jerome along with his recollections of the illusive man himself, who is perhaps a deeper mystery than any of the stories. Sidney Wainwright's whereabouts and fate remain a mystery to this day. So sit by the hearth on a dark and stormy night. Read yourself a story or two by firelight. Try to forget the sense that someone is there with you, watching, always just out of sight. I warn you, once the clock chimes midnight, there is no knowing how this tale will end." Each story, had me wanting to get to the end to find out what happened and at the same time, hanging on to every sentence hoping it would keep me in this eager anticipation for a little longer. - Debbie Carr, Sydney Chic An engaging collection of stories told, and relayed, by two interesting men. The collection of Sidney Wainwrights stories in 'After Midnight' are an entertaining read... The story of 'Mr Simms and Mr Redfellow' was a particular favorite of mine among the collection. It was a well rounded ending to a wonderful collection of short stories! - An Amazon Reader Author InformationWhile I could tell you the flavour of Mr Wainwright's pipe tobacco there is little I really know about him. I can't tell you the names of his parents, where he was born, the date of his birth, or even which year. What I do know is that the dark tales of folklore and local legend that he grew up with left a deep and lasting impression on him. The stories in 'After Midnight' were penned by Wainwright in the 1940's and 1950s from his travels and investigations in the first half of the twentieth century. They draw on the folklore of the places in Britain that he travelled to during that period. In 1959, after setting out on an expedition to New Guinea, Wainwright disappeared when his ship, the Aurora, vanished in the Atlantic Ocean. To add intrigue to the unfortunate events, the only copy of the 'After Midnight' manuscript at the time was lost in a mysterious fire at the premises of his publisher. I tried many times after I lost my friend to search for his origins, for his home and family. To my amazement, all my inquiries were without success. It was as if my friend and client, who I had known in flesh and blood for years had never existed. But that is another story... - Archibald Jerome - Tab Content 6Author Website:Countries AvailableAll regions |
