Overview

Since 1985, when Mikhail Gorbachev came to power, the political map of Europe has changed completely. The Iron Curtain has been lifted and a new drama of economic and democratic reconstruction has begun. This book is about how the drama came to be staged and how it is likely to be played over the next 35 years. The first part of the book covers the years of Gorbachev's greatest impact on European affairs: the reunification of Germany, the end of the Cold War, Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia freed from Soviet domination. The second part provides different scenarios for Europe's future in a bold attempt at geo-political and economic forecasting. What will happen to the economics of Eastern Europe? How is Germany's foreign and defence policy going to be shaped? What are the prospects of an enlarged European Economic Community?
