After a Bleeding Brain: Life Goes on

Overview

Andrew Bloom has overcome more obstacles within a few years than many people face in a lifetime. As described in his first book, A Bleeding Brain, Bloom successfully recovered after his first brain aneurism in his early twenties. But two decades later, after suffering his second and third brain aneurisms and undergoing a risky, complex surgery, he was left with nerve damage, paralysis, and weakness on his right side. As a result, a lot of the activities that many people take for granted now present a struggle for him. Through sheer determination and a can-do attitude, he has re-learned how to walk, talk, and drive a car. He has had to come up with new strategies for such simple tasks as taking a shower or making breakfast. Even little things like putting dollar bills in a wallet, opening an envelope, or getting the daily mail present challenges for him, because they normally require two good hands. After a Bleeding Brain continues the story of Bloom's efforts to recover and adapt to his new normal. Now, instead of coaching his kids' soccer teams, he finds himself on the sidelines. Instead of having a busy work schedule, he is a stay-at-home dad. Realizing that few people survive a single brain bleed, much less three of them, Bloom has tackled this phase of life with a new appreciation of the things he once took for granted. Acknowledging that he's lucky to be alive, he has developed new priorities, focused on new activities, and gained a new appreciation for time spent with family and friends. One of Bloom's favorite quotes is from Roger Crawford: Being challenged in life is inevitable; being defeated is optional. After a Bleeding Brain drives home the message that health crises and negative prognoses can be overcome. Bloom offers insights into how to successfully deal with life-changing disabilities. As he puts it, Of anything I've learned in life or stated in my books, this is the most important: Never Give Up!
