OverviewThis book focuses on documenting how Afro-Europeans perceive themselves and how they are perceived by others in both historical and contemporary discourse. To this end, critical discourse analysis is used to examine the socially constructed categories of Black and White, as well as whether socially constructed images and ascriptions of the Black-White dichotomy found in 18th- and 19th-century scientific racism persist in the contemporary language and everyday life of Austrian society. In addition to the black-white analysis, the social position of Afro-Europeans within this framework of social construction is also demonstrated. Qualitative interviews with Afro-Austrian young people illustrate that - although the majority of Afro-Austrians were born and raised in Austria - they are perceived as the 'other' or the 'stranger' in racist discourse due to their physical appearance.
