He is leading and contributing to a number of international and national multidisciplinary research projects on ocean issues. Major publications include: P Vrancken South Africa and the Law of the Sea (2011) and P Vrancken & M Tsamenyi (eds) The Law of the Sea - The African Union and its Members States (2017). Charl Hugo is the professor of banking law and director of the Centre for Banking Law at the University of Johannesburg. He has published widely in the field of trade financing, and is a member of the Banking Commission of the International Chamber of Commerce.
