African Literature: Beyond the Western Gaze

Overview

This edited collection focuses on current aspects of African literature. It covers a wide range of literary features, such as oral literature and orature, and it includes feminist issues and how women are represented in African literature. The book employs ubuntu as a traditional human value that enforces compassion and caring, and it shows how this value can be used to combat gender-based violence. Various contributors engage with social matters in several chapters, such as the relationship between literature and social development. Another interesting aspect is the discussion on the translation and adaptation of literary texts for television dramas from African languages to the English language.

Reviews

‘If you believed the Western Gaze, African literature begins in the 1960s and in a European language. But what this anthology of critical work shows is that African literature has a depth and breadth in terms of periodisation and multiplicity of languages that should be part of our literary oxygen. This is a fundamental contribution to the African literary tradition. I can’t wait to use this anthology in my classes on African literature.’ — Mukoma Wa Ngugi, Department of Literatures in English, Cornell University
