OverviewHere is a complete summary of all results obtained by work done on the taxonomy, ecology, physiology and biochemistry of the unique group of bacteria: Aerobic Photosynthetic Bacteria. Contradictory to the traditional concept of bacterial photosynthesis the unique property of Aerobic Photosynthetic Bacteria is their ability to synthesize pigments and to utilize light energy only under aerobic conditions. Until now two classes of bacteria belonging to this group have been identified and their taxonomical relation to the purple nonsulfur photosynthetic bacteria is discussed.
