Adventures of the First Woman Mountie IV. The Fourth Omnibus

Overview

RCMP Corporal Alexandra Houston and her friend and partner, police service dog Silver, continue their adventures in a series of cases that take them to different parts of Canada. This fourth omnibus edition contains novels thirteen through sixteen in the ""Adventures of the First Woman Mountie"" series. It is 1980. The chance discovery of a sunken cargo of Second World War-era uranium ore in the Gulf of St. Lawrence puts Alex and Silver on the trail of a clandestine theft and black-market operation led by someone that doesn't hesitate to kill in order to avoid exposure. The first death appears to be accidental. After the second 'accidental' death, Alex is convinced she's investigating not only a mystery, but two murders as well. (Book 13, ""An Inimitable Mountie""). Later, Alex is drawn into the shadowy world of espionage and betrayal when she is asked to hunt for a security leak that is buried somewhere inside one of Canada's intelligence services. But which one? If it's within her own service, the 'leak' may already be aware of her assignment, in which case the hunter could become the hunted. (Book 14, ""An Inside Mountie""). In 1982, Alex is just beginning a Prince Edward Island honeymoon with her husband Don when she is asked to respond to a call for bomb-threat assistance at a cruise ship. With time pressing and no other police-dog-service team available, they agree to try to help. Their fairly routine search quickly transitions to a request for them to join the ship for the rest of the voyage as a makeshift, undercover protective-service detail for VIP passengers. What at first seems to be a potentially pleasant and straightforward task becomes complicated in a hurry when they learn that the VIPs are not who they seem to be, and may be under threat from several different kinds of people, for quite different reasons. (Book 15. ""An Interrupted Mountie""). Later, Alex, Silver, and Don are sent on a covert mission. Someone has been using a fly-in-fishing camp on a remote northern lake as a cover for sophisticated, but unlicensed and highly secret cancer treatments thereby enabling wealthy patients to avoid long waiting lists and get treated promptly. When a powerful U.S. Senator goes there for treatment and never returns, the CIA sends a covert operative to investigate. The alarm bells really go off when a charter pilot phones an unlisted CIA number to relay a codeword meaning that the operative had been captured or killed, at which point the U.S. Government reluctantly decides to formally ask for the Canadian Government's assistance (Book 16. ""An Inveterate Mountie"").
