Overview

Opioids are not always the most suitable analgesic therapy, despite being effective in the treatment of a wide variety of painful conditions. Many non-opioid analgesics are frequently preferable for the treatment of mild or moderate pain, because of their lower incidence of side-effects, or beacause they have a more relevant site of action. Although many non-opioid drugs are available in different parts of the world, not all of them are equally well known or available to the practicing physician. This text is made up of the highlights of a symposium on the use of dipyrone and other non-opioid analgesics in the treatment of pain, and emphasizes that dipyrone and other non-opioid drugs are effective and well tolerated therapies for both chronic and acute pain.
