OverviewAquaculture now provides more than 50% of the global supply of fisheries products for direct human consumption. Given stagnating capture fisheries and a growing demand for seafood, driven by demographics and changing consumption patterns, the importance of aquaculture for food security is likely to increase. Aquaculture production at the current level of intensity is a relatively new phenomenon. It poses economic, environmental and social challenges, which may be poorly understood or inadequately addressed within current policy frameworks, and hence the sustainability of operations may be compromised. Issues that may constrain the sector's development and performance include the management of externalities and the lack of an enabling business environment. The OECD Committee for Fisheries acknowledges the important role of aquaculture, both in terms of economic activity and in terms of food security. In April 2010, it organised a workshop with support from the French Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries to address key policy challenges of the aquaculture sector. Policy makers, academics, industry representatives, NGOs and international organisations gathered to discuss the critical economic, environmental and social aspects of aquaculture. This publication presents a selection of key issues covered by the workshop and includes a large number of country case studies, which provide specific examples of national approaches to aquaculture management.
