OverviewPresently, the diverse researchers of the phenolics community invest their time and energy in a broad range of activities from the isolation and identification of new phenolic compounds from plant materials to the study of the effect and mechanism of action of known and novel phenolics in vitro and in vivo. Reflecting this diversity, the symposium covered widespread topics, with outstanding contributions ranging from isolation and identification of naturally occurring bioactive compounds, to the understanding of their health benefits. Jayaprakasha is working as Research Professor at Texas A&M University with 28 years of research and 3 years of industrial experience. His research involves bioassay directed discovery of novel compounds, purification and chemical characterization of natural compounds from fruits, vegetables, spices and herbs using preliminary invitro assays such as anticancer, antimicrobial, antidiabetics and antioxidant properties. Isolated and identified more than 90 novel, rare and unstudied bioactive compounds from various natural products. He filed 24 patents in United States, Europe and India. He published more than 145 research papers, 25 book chapters, 210 presentations, edited four books and one encyclopedia. Due to his outstanding research contribution, he received four Fellow Awards from Indian Chemists, Agricultural Food and Food Chemistry, American Chemical Society, The Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), UK and Association of Food Scientists & Technologist (India). Bhimanagouda S. Patil is Director of the Vegetable and Fruit Improvement Center and Professor in the Department of Horticultural Sciences at Texas A&M AgriLife Research. He has published more than 190 peer-reviewed manuscripts focused on Farm to Consumer Approaches involving pre- and post-harvest factors affecting health promoting compounds, taste, flavor, and quality. He is actively involved in both research and educational activities related to global level on 'Foods for Health'. He gave more than 120 invited presentations in land grant institutions, professional societies, industry, and learned society organizations including 9 plenary/keynote in several countries including China, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Brazil, Sweden, France, India, Israel, Spain, Canada, Portugal, Chile, and different states in the USA. He received 18 awards, including Healthy Living Lifetime Achievement Award by the Texas International Producers Association, Distinguished Service Award from the American Chemical Society- Division of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, Outstanding Graduate Educator Award from the American Society for Horticultural Sciences, and Outstanding Achievement Research Award from the TAMU College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. Four professional societies recognized as a Fellow, a title bestowed on those who have made exceptional contributions to research and academia. Dr. Giuseppe Gattuso is Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Universita di Messina, Italy. His most recent research has been carried out in the field of the supramolecular chemistry of macrocyclic receptors and their applications in sensing devices and self-assembling smart materials, as well as in the area of natural compounds, on the isolation and characterization of flavonoids and other phenolics from plant sources, and their antioxidant and biological properties. He is the author or co-author of more than 90 publications on international journals and invited book chapters. He got his degree in Chemistry in 1993 at the Universita di Messina, and his PhD at the University of Birmingham, UK, in 1997 under the supervision of the Nobel Laureate Professor Sir J. F. Stoddart.
