OverviewAdvances in Gear Design and Manufacture deals with gears, gear transmissions, and advanced methods of gear production. The book is focused on discussion of the latest discoveries and accomplishments in gear design and production, with chapters written by international experts in the field. Topics are aligned to meet the requirements of the modern scientific theory of gearing, providing readers precise knowledge and recommendations on how perfect gears and gear transmissions can be designed and produced, and how they work. It explains how gears and gear transmissions can be designed to reach high a “power-to-weight” ratio, and how to design and produce compact, high-capacity gearboxes. Table of ContentsReviewsThis edited volume provides comprehensive coverage of the kinematics and kinetics used in gear design. There has actually been a need for such a book to fill a gap in the literature on gear design and manufacture, since this topic is not well covered in traditional machine design books. The book is a useful reference for senior year undergraduate engineering students, and also very useful for working gear designers and manufacturers. Summing Up: Highly recommended. --S. D. El Wakil, emeritus, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, CHOICE Reviews This edited volume provides comprehensive coverage of the kinematics and kinetics used in gear design. There has actually been a need for such a book to fill a gap in the literature on gear design and manufacture, since this topic is not well covered in traditional machine design books. The first, second, and fourth chapters cover the gear laws and the design of gear teeth so as to reduce wear and noise during actual working conditions, while the design and kinematics of planar gears are covered in chapter 8. The technological aspects of gear manufacture are also covered in contributions by top experts from Germany, Sweden, and the US. Gear honing and finishing are discussed in chapter 2, while production of gears by means of powder metallurgy (PM) is covered in chapter 9. Heat treatment, too, is not left behind, since detailed coverage is provided in chapter 10. This reviewer was most impressed to see the in-depth coverage of electrohydrodynamic lubrication of conformal gears in chapter 5. The book is a useful reference for senior year undergraduate engineering students, and also very useful for working gear designers and manufacturers. --S. D. El Wakil, emeritus, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty and professionals. El Wakil, emeritus, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, CHOICE Reviews Author InformationDr. Stephen P. Radzevich is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and a Professor of Manufacturing Engineering. He received his M.Sc. in 1976, Ph.D. in 1982, and Dr.(Eng)Sc. in 1991, all in mechanical engineering. Dr. Radzevich has extensive industrial experience in gear design and manufacture. He has developed numerous software packages dealing with computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided machining (CAM) of precise gear finishing for a variety of industrial sponsors. His main research interest is the Kinematic Geometry of Part Surface Generation, particularly with a particular focus on precision gear design, high-power-density gear trains, torque share in multi-flow gear trains, design of special purpose gear cutting/finishing tools, and design and machine (finish) of precision gears for low-noise and noiseless transmissions of cars, light trucks and so on. Dr. Radzevich has spent over 40 years developing software, hardware and other processes for gear design and optimization. Besides his work for industry, he trains engineering students at universities and gear engineers in companies. He has authored and coauthored over 30 monographs, handbooks, and textbooks. The monographs “Generation of Surfaces” (RASTAN, 2001), “Kinematic Geometry of Surface Machining” (CRC Press, 2007, 2nd Edition 2014), “CAD/CAM of Sculptured Surfaces on Multi-Axis NC Machine: The DG/K-Based Approach” (M&C Publishers, 2008), “Gear Cutting Tools: Fundamentals of Design and Computation” (CRC Press, 2010), “Precision Gear Shaving” (Nova Science Publishers, 2010), “Dudley’s Handbook of Practical Gear Design and Manufacture” (CRC Press, 2012), “Geometry of Surfaces: A Practical Guide for Mechanical Engineers” (Willey, 2013) are among his the recently published volumes. He also authored and coauthored over 300 scientific papers, and holds over 250 patents on inventions in the field (USA, Japan, Russia, Europe, Canada, Soviet Union, South Korea, Mexico, and others).
