His research and development activities encompass a broad spectrum of fields, including materials testing and characterization, advanced composite materials design and fabrication, metallurgy, electronic packaging thermal management, electromagnetic interference shielding, integrated optical waveguides, functional metamaterials and metadevices, energy materials, and flexible and printed electronics. A holder of a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, as well as Master's and Bachelor's degrees in Materials and Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Tong has authored eight books, published over 30 peer-reviewed articles, and holds 10 patents. A senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), he was honored with the Henry Marion Howe Medal from ASM International in 1999 for his significant contributions to the research and development of advanced aluminum composite materials.
