Adrianne's Ears: A Story of Endurance and Freedom

Overview

In this thoughtful and compelling memoir, author Adrianne Haynes traces the incredible story of her survival. Growing up in post-war London, Adrianne grows up in an unimaginably toxic environment, contending with an alcoholic, abusive mother who pits her and her older sister against each other, encouraging physical violence between the two. Meanwhile, she faces no shortage of personal traumas, dealing with a learning disability when the concept had yet to be recognized, fending off abuse from her teachers, and dealing with the aftermath of a local boy threatening her at knifepoint, demanding a look up her skirt. It is not until her mother dies and she gets the chance to become her brother's legal ward in Canada that she has a chance at escape-but not before discovering a secret that will threaten her life before she gets there. Adrianne's Ears is a beautifully written rendition of a truly extraordinary life, harrowing and heartening in turns, and a testament to the power of faith in God, even-and perhaps especially-in the face of unimaginable odds.

Author Information

Adrianne's discombobulated dyslexic mind does not define her, but is part of her. It will not stop her from telling others who she is, but it will enhance her journey. For quite a long time, she let dyslexia tell her story, spending years ashamed, not knowing why she did the things she did and focused on everything she couldn't do. Adrianne knew she didn't want this kind of life, full of misunderstandings and missed moments. So, she saw precious moments of who she thought she should be on her travels. She went about gathering her words for her narratives later in life. Now she has a dream of helping others. No longer is she full of holes shifting through life's colander, lost in a maze of wonky words. Through God's grace, her holes are well healed, and she lives the life she never thought possible. Adrianne is excited about the prospect of writing and illustrating another book. Can she draw two eyes the same? Will others feel the same emotions as her when they read her story?
