Overview

This book proposes an interpretation of the iconographic elements and an iconological analysis of the Huastec sculpture of the so-called ""Adolescente de Jalpan"", which seems to be related to the iconography and iconology associated with the god Quetzalcoatl and his twin brother, Xolotl. After reviewing the possible symbolism of the sculpture, the author discusses the relevance of the name of the reference work as coming from the Sierra Gorda, Querétaro, México, relevant because previous scholarship proposed that the piece was located at the Tamtok site, San Luis Potosí, and from there it was taken to the Serranogordense area. The author challenges this view, offering a review of the various testimonies – written and oral - that support or refute the notion. Archival documentation, previously unpublished, is cited in the discussion.

María Teresa Muñoz Espinosa: Arqueóloga. Egresada de la Escuela Nacional de Antropología e Historia (Licenciatura en Arqueología) y de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (Maestría en Historia del Arte  y Doctorado en Estudios Mesoamericanos). Candidata al grado de Doctor en estudios Mesoamericanos por la UNAM. Profesor-Investigador de tiempo completo de la Dirección de Estudios Arqueológicos del INAH. Directora del Proyecto Arqueológico Norte del Estado de Querétaro, México, desde 1990. Este proyecto contó con financiamiento del CONACyT (2003-2006). Estancias de investigación en las universidades de Texas en Austin, California en Berkeley, EE.UU., American Museum of Natural History, Nueva York, EE.UU. ente otras.   Ha publicado diversos trabajos en torno a su área de investigación, entre ellos su libro Cultura e historia de la Sierra Gorda de Querétaro, México (2007) patrocinado por el CONACyT y la editorial Plaza y Valdés, y “Los animales enseñaron el camino…” La fauna de la Sierra Gorda queretana a través de sus representaciones cerámicas arqueológicas, Oxford, Archaeopress Pub., 2021, (Access Archaeology).
