The history of the lordships of the upper aristocracy in the Empire between 1150 and 1250 is characterised by the fact that their existence was threatened in the absence of a male heir. As a rule, it was impossible to pass on fiefs and allods in their entirety to daughters. In such cases, conflicts over the inheritance were frequent and even relatively well-established lordships could be dissolved. The analysis of how contemporaries dealt with the open situation created by the absence of a male heir provides a variety of insights into the political culture of the 12th and 13th centuries: It reveals forms of conflict management and negotiation processes; it provides crucial information about the room for manoeuvre of women; and the differences in inheritance law offer a window into the differentiation of ranks among the upper aristocracy.
