Overview

This report documents good practices and lessons learned from around the world in emergency and humanitarian situations, highlighting FAO's successes in building resilience and mainstreaming gender. These include labour-saving technologies and fostering participation through initiatives such as women's open schools, farmer field schools, and community organizations.Conflicts and disasters around the world, and their negative impacts on lives and properties, are drawing attention to the need to increase the resilience of vulnerable rural communities and their livelihood sources. Protection from sexual and gender-based violence is an area that deserves special attention, particularly in areas of protracted crises. This stock-taking exercise encourages the cross-fertilization of experiences among participating offices as well as those that have not yet taken part. Some of these practices are already being scaled up, including fuel-efficient stoves under Safe Access to Fuel and Energy, and the cajas rurales or caisses de resilience as one of the livelihood approaches building on associations of farmer women and men.
