OverviewChildren's Book for AdultsHelp teachers, grandparents, and other family members understand what it means to be gluten free for our kids who need to be gluten free. Special dietary requirements can leave some children out of food related treats and special events. This children's book helps the adult reader understand the importance of pre-planning and communication so that no child is left out. Children with special dietary requirements may need to eat differently, but they should never be left out completely. From the first day of school through Valentine's Day, this book helps the reader understand gluten free through various classroom situations: surprise donuts on the first day of school, birthday cupcakes, ice cream cone crumbs that contaminate the gluten-free ice cream, a classroom pizza party, and a Thanksgiving feast. Adam provides children a positive role model with his accepting attitude and with his ability to speak up for his needs. But Adam also shows the reader the natural sad emotions that arise when he's unable to share foods with peers, helping to increase empathy and understanding in the reader of this book. Table of ContentsReviewsAuthor InformationDebbie has been involved in celiac awareness and support since she discovered that she needed to be gluten free in 2000. Her desire to increase celiac awareness and an understanding of a gluten free diet led to Adam's Gluten Free Surprise: Helping Others Understand Gluten Free, her first children's book. Her inspiration for Adam was her children who supported and accepted a gluten free kitchen because their mom's health depended on it. She was inspired by her son's positive matter-of-fact attitude when it was discovered that he also required a gluten free diet. He faced each school and social event with an inspiringly positive acceptance. Debbie is passionate about the testing of children, and anyone who may have health issues related to undiagnosed celiac, a disease that affects nearly 1% of us. She hopes to ease the path for those who require a gluten free diet with her books Adam's Gluten Free Surprise and Hailey's Gluten Free Surprise. She also wrote, The Syrup Maze: An Inspirational Journey Through Recovery From a Traumatic Brain Injury, about her son's recovery from an auto accident in 2012. Included is the struggle they faced in the hospital and in rehab with safe and appropriate gluten free food for her son who has nonceliac gluten sensitivity. Change is needed.
