OverviewGustav Schiefler, a lawyer from Hamburg, and his wife, Luise, were for decades among Emil Nolde's trusted friends and patrons. It is a rare stroke of luck that the correspondence between the artist couple and collector friends, with over 7 letters, has been preserved nearly in its entirety. The correspondence shows a lively and detailed picture of Nolde's life and work from 9 into the 95 s. This makes it possible for the dating of works, trips, and encounters to be verified conclusively and in part anew and to shed critical light on the image he cultivated. Journal entries by Schiefler and other letters and documents from the estates supplement the exchange of letters. An in-depth commentary makes the two-volume edition a pleasure to read, not only for art scholars.
