OverviewThis was a retrospective, descriptive, single-center study that included all patients hospitalized in intensive care for bacterial CAP between January 1, 2008, and July 31, 2015. During the study period, 330 patients were diagnosed with bacterial CAP, with an overall incidence of 8.6%. The average age was 59 years, with a predominance of males. At least one previous medical condition was noted in 84% of patients. A Fine class >= IV and a CURB-65 score >= 4 were noted in 67% and 30% of patients, respectively. Upon admission, 73% presented at least one sign of severity. Mechanical ventilation was required on admission in 64% of patients. S. pneumoniae was the most frequently isolated pathogen (30.3%). Empirical antibiotic therapy was dual therapy in 52% of cases. At least one complication was noted in 44% of patients. The mortality rate was 30.6%. The average cost of a patient admitted to intensive care for CAP ranged from 906 to 3,596 Tunisian dinars.
