Overview

"Self-defense is a justification-based form of defense. Since using force in self-defense is always involved, it can serve as a defense against assault, battery, and criminal homicide. Self-defense is a statutory defense in most states (Mich. Comp. Laws, 2010). On a case-by-case basis, however, courts may modify or enlarge it. When a defendant defends himself with deadly force, most states have additional rules. Any force that has the potential to cause death is considered a deadly force. Someone doesn't need to pass away for a force to be deemed lethal. Depending on the situation, self-defense may serve as a perfect or imperfect defense. Defendants who kill someone in self-defense may be found not guilty, have a murder charge dropped to the second or third degree, or even have a manslaughter conviction added to their record. Although the US legal system generally forbids using violence or force against others, courts have acknowledged that everyone has the right to self-defense and may use reasonable force to do so.
