Abstract: Abstract of scholarly project entitled Abused Women in Hong Kong: The Nature of Their Abuse and The Effect of Abuse on Their Quality of Life Submitted by Yeung Wai Kwan For the degree of Master of Nursing in Advanced Practice at the University of Hong Kong in September 2002 Objective: To study the incidence and nature of intimate partner abuse; and to explore the effect of the abuse on the abused women's quality of life. Study design: This was a secondary data analysis. The primary study was a pilot study of an exploratory and descriptive study design using convenience sampling. Twenty-eight abused women with a history of abuse during pregnancy were recruited. The abused women were interviewed and asked to complete a questionnaire by using The Chinese version of the Conflict Tactic Scale and the Chinese (HK) version of the SF-36 Health Survey with two additions of sexual abuse and demographics to examine the nature and risk factors of abuse and their quality of life respectively. SPSS was used for statistical analysis. Results: Of the 28 women, 26 (92.8%) had experienced verbal abuse during the past 12 months, 4 (10%) experienced minor physical abuse and 1 (3.5%) experienced sexual abuse. The mean score of SF-36 of these women was generally lower than the normative value of the 18-40 years age group of women except in the general health and physical function score. Risk factors were not identified. Intimate partner abuse was not associated with their lower score of quality of life in this study. Conclusion: Although the findings were not conclusive due to the small sample size, in view of their lower scores of SF-36, routine clinical screening for intimate partner abuse is recommended during antenatal and postnatal visit as essential to prevent potential trauma and to protect health.
