Table of ContentsReviewsAuthor InformationBjrnstjerne Martinius Bjrnson (8 December 1832 - 26 April 1910) was a Norwegian poet who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1903 ""in recognition of his noble, magnificent, and versatile poetry, which has always been distinguished by both the freshness of its inspiration and the rare purity of its spirit."" He was the first Norwegian Nobel laureate and a prolific polemicist in Norwegian public life and Scandinavian cultural debate. Along with Ibsen, Lie, and Kielland, Bjrnson is regarded as one of Norway's four great writers. He is well known for writing the lyrics to the Norwegian national song, ""Ja, vi elsker dette landet."" Bjrnson's text inspired Fredrikke Waaler's piece for voice and piano (Spinnersken), as did Anna Teichmüller's (Die Prinzessin). Bjrnson was born on Bjrgan's farm at Kvikne, a remote community in the sterdalen valley sixty miles south of Trondheim. Peder Bjrnson, the pastor of Kvikne, was transferred to the parish of Nesset, outside Molde in Romsdal, in 1837. Bjrnson spent his boyhood at the Nesset Parsonage in this picturesque location.
