Overview

Abraham, notes Cardinal Martini in this book dedicated to the figure of the great patriarch, is the father of faith on the move, a symbol of all those who seek God. He is our father 'not only in life as it is lived, in faith considered objectively' but also 'for his radical attitude of faith' which makes him 'the exemplary model of the human being in an attitude of acceptance and availability.' His setting out on the journey reminds us, of course, of the need to free ourselves from the ambiguity of a certain 'traditional belief'. In fact, Abraham would learn the heard way how unpredictable God is in his incredible irruption into history. He would learn this by going through fear and temptation, discovering how God's ways are capable of surprising and disturbing us. Carlo Maria Martini (15/2/27 - 31/8/2012), Jesuit and biblical scholar, was Archbishop of Milan from 1979 to 2002. Considered by Catholic and non-Catholics alike to be one of the most listened to and followed voices there, he resigned from his various responsibilities in 2002 and decided to retire to Jerusalem to resume his beloved biblical studies, but even from this ancient capital of Major Faiths, he ensured that his voice was strongly heard. He returned to Italy for health reasons but even during his illness, he never ceased disturbing consciences with clarity and intelligence. At his death, more than 150,000 people filed past as he lay in state in the Milan Cathedral.
