Abbott Street Adventures: Book 1: Hide and Seek

Overview

Abbott Street Adventures: Hide and Seek is a middle-grade mystery that bridges continents and eras, blending real locations with a touch of fantasy. When classmates Lisa, Jane, and Sam are assigned an English project to compare international and local news, they uncover the strange case of two missing English boys who suddenly appear in Brisbane. Their search for answers leads them to the towering camphor laurel trees on Abbott Street - and the discovery of a hidden portal linking Australia to the historic city of Bath, Somerset and Thursford Wood, Norfolk. With the guidance of their science teacher, Mr Madden, the friends must secretly return the boys before the wider world learns of the portal and chaos erupts. Along the way, they encounter danger, unravel puzzles, and learn what it means to trust one another. Set between New Farm Park in Brisbane, the cobbled streets of Bath, and the magical woodland in Thursford, this exciting first book in the Abbott Street Adventures series captures the magic of place, the bonds of friendship, and the thrill of discovery. Ideal for readers aged 9-12 who love fantasy adventures, like The Strangeworlds Travel Agency and mysteries with a timeless twist, it will spark curiosity and imagination in every young reader.

Author Information

I grew up in England and moved to Australia in the early 1970s as one of the 'Ten Pound Poms'. Though Brisbane is now home, I've returned to England many times and each time, I make sure I visit a park, a woodland, or a forest. Here in Brisbane, I often walk through New Farm Park, and my favourite path is down Abbott Street, where a majestic row of camphor laurel trees arch overhead. One day, I noticed a pair of workmen's boots sitting at the base of the Grand Tree that stood at the end of Abbott Street. Something about it made me pause. What if a workman had been resting there, eating lunch with his boots off to cool his feet... and then vanished? That moment lit a spark - and the story began.Fuelled by a deep love of nature, music, mystery, and the idea that energy might hold more secrets than we realise, I began writing my debut novel, Abbott Street Adventures: Hide and Seek. What began as a single story, soon grew into a trilogy. Each book can be enjoyed on its own, however the friendships and themes woven through Books Two and Three, deepen the mystery along the way.
