Overview

Alabama is a beautiful state with a tense history. The Deep South struggles with poverty, and this creates a plethora of abandonment issues. Cotton fields abound while farmhouses are in shambles. The childhood home of a famous figure is long forgotten, with only a sign next to the road reading, Rosa Parks lived here. The mansion of a former FBI agent is left to decay in Alabama's hot and humid climate. Tornados, neglect, and death can leave even the most prized properties crumbling beyond repair. There are many reasons as to why these properties are forgotten and quickly given back to nature. In Abandoned Deep South: Lower Alabama, explorer Eric Hammon discovers and uncovers LA (as some locals call Lower Alabama). The southern portion of the state is full of schools, funeral parlors, and plantation homes in disrepair. Overgrowth and debris sometimes keep these places out of sight and out of mind. The author seeks out these hidden gems and documents his finds.

Author Information

ERIC HAMMON was born and raised in the Deep South, and later ventured out West. After several years of exploring the Southwest of America, the land down under was calling. Australia became his next destination, then New Zealand a year later. He eventually settled in Asia and lived nearly a decade in Vietnam and Thailand. Fast forward more than twelve years and over sixty countries later, he found his way back to his old home, sweet home Alabama. The pandemic halted overseas traveling and a hobby emerged: hunting abandoned places. A new obsession and exploration led to a book and social media outlets displaying these pieces of forgotten history. Hammer, as most people call him, would have a new path rediscovering his home state and country after living abroad. Follow his journey @Hammer_Worldwide on Instagram and YouTube, or see hundreds of albums from all over the world at facebook.com/eric.justin.hammon.
