Overview

There is a way which seemeth right unto a man; but the end thereof are the ways of death.- Prov. xiv. 12. Most people are more concerned about the heavenly goal than the way which leads to it. The expression all roads lead to Rome may have been true in the palmy days of the Roman Empire. But it has never been true that all roads lead to the New Jerusalem. Of that fact our text furnishes abundant evidence. Analyzing this way which seemeth right we find: I. That it is the way of a self-assertive judgment, which in its nature is narrow, false and untrustworthy. II. That it is the way of a careless content with the present state of life, and an indifferent regard for the future. III. That it is the way of disobedience to the divine command, of disregard for the divine compassion, and hence must necessarily culminate in death. Note then: 1. The utter folly of trusting a way that only seems to be right. 2. The great need of taking heed to the way in which we are traveling and of being sure it is right. -Homiletic Review, Volume52 [1906]
