Overview

A Tyneside Heritage is a detailed local socio-economic history, developed through the lives of three generations of the author's family. The story begins in the early nineteenth century with the author's great-great-grandfather Robert Chapman JP, draper, South Shields Borough Councillor and sailing collier owner. It continues with his son Henry Chapman JP, founder of a chartered accountancy firm and building society. It ends with the author's distinguished grandfather Col. Sir Robert Chapman, Borough Councillor, Mayor, MP in the 1930s, Chairman of North Eastern Trading Estates, Vice-Lieutenant for County Durham and president of numerous local philanthropic associations. AUTHOR: Peter S. Chapman enjoyed a career in housing, founding a niche consultancy firm. He is a non-executive director of several companies. He has been Chair of a number of charities in his fields of interest, including the Levantine Foundation (working on manuscript restoration projects in Egypt), the Friends of the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in Cambridge (where he sponsored an annual lecture for a decade) and a local youth charity, Kensington Dragons Football Club. Living in London, he retains close links with the North East. He is an active member of the South Shields Local History Group, having delivered two lectures on themes from A Tyneside Heritage. He has written numerous articles and edited housing reports and publications. This is his first book. 200 colour illustrations
