A True Dragon Slayer of North Floda

Overview

Sixteen-year-old Jason Glover was a farmer. His father had been a farmer, and his great-grandfather, as well as his great-great-grandfather, all the way back as far as the Speaker of the Word had recorded his family history. But Jason didn't mind. Farming was a noble trade, and he was excellent at it. And even though the birth rates in his village were low, he had managed to become engaged to the prettiest and most fruitful family in the entire village. Mike and Margery Fleming had two living sons and three living daughters! They were the miracle family of the village. The Flemings were also farmers but grew lettuce and cabbage, rather than corn. Thirteen-year-old Marina was their oldest daughter and Jason's fiancée. Marina had been in love with Jason since she was ten, but it took Jason another year to realize that he was in love with her as well. Marina was already the prettiest girl in the whole village, as well as smart and friendly. Once Jason made up his mind to marry her, they both made it official by getting their parents to consent. Since both of their allowed farming plots were next to each other, it meant both families could help each other in farming, as well as making it through the harsh winters in North Floda. Even Jason's baby sister, the stubborn, hard-headed, and sometimes lethal Ruby, approved of the joining. They all expected the two to wed, have as many children as possible, and grow old together. But the Lord, Baron Mooney, had other plans. He sent his soldiers to round up every unmarried girl from every village under his command, from the age of thirteen to nineteen summers. The Baron was getting old and still didn't have an heir to his throne. Baron Mooney decided that if he had enough females to mate with, eventually, one would produce a male heir. As each girl reached her eighteenth harvest ceremony, Baron Mooney would wed her and be hers until she gave him a male heir or got too old for him to enjoy. Of course, Jason and a few of the other farmers of his village found this arrangement unacceptable, and in the end, several soldiers and many villagers lay dead, including Jason's parents, and Jason's little seven-year-old sister lay bleeding with an arrow in her tiny chest. As more of the barons show up and the teenage females are taken away, Jason and a handful of surviving villagers are forced to flee for their lives but manage to carry away little Ruby. Jason makes a vow as he heads off into the nearby woods; he'll find a way to free Marina before her eighteenth Harvest Festival, or he will die in the process.
